Romain Pilon is a French guitarist and composer recognized on the international jazz scene. Described by Jazzwise as “a brilliant improviser,” he has developed a distinctive musical voice, combining harmonic sophistication, deep listening, and a strong sense of interplay with an open and exploratory approach.
He began playing guitar at the age of 10, early on exploring a wide range of musical styles that continue to inform his artistic identity. After studying at the conservatory, he was awarded a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston. Upon graduating, he was selected to represent the guitar department, performing as an opening act for Pat Metheny. He then spent a year in New York, performing regularly in jazz clubs, before settling in Paris in 2004.
Deeply rooted in collective musical practice, Romain Pilon is a sought-after collaborator, known for his refined accompaniment and strong sense of musical interaction. He has performed and recorded with artists such as Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, Baptiste Trotignon, Linda May Han Oh, Will Vinson, Marc Copland, Pierre de Bethmann, Peter Bernstein, Stéphane Belmondo, Sylvain Luc and Greg Hutchinson.
As a leader and co-leader, he has released several critically acclaimed albums (NY3, Colorfield, The Magic Eye, Copper, Falling Grace, Open Roads), featuring musicians such as Ben Wendel, Walter Smith III, Jeff Ballard, Seamus Blake, and Matt Brewer. The international press has praised the coherence and maturity of his musical voice, with Jazz Times noting “a superb sense of confidence.”
In 2018, he co-founded a trio with bassist Jeff Denson and drummer Brian Blade. Their albums Between Two Worlds and Finding Light led to a U.S. tour of around fifty concerts, showcasing a music that is at once open, lyrical, and deeply interactive.
Alongside his performing career, Romain Pilon is a dedicated educator whose teaching is informed by his experience on stage. He shares a demanding and sensitive approach to jazz, attentive to each student’s individual voice. He has given numerous masterclasses in France and internationally, and has mentored many students who are now active on the professional scene.
