Pierre Monty began studying the flute with Roger Bourdin, earning the Premier Prix from the Versailles Conservatory in 1974, followed two years later by the Concert Diploma from the École Normale de Musique de Paris under Fernand Caratgé. He began his career at a very young age and, in 1985, received the Charles Oulmont Prize from the Fondation de France.
He has performed as a soloist on the finest stages in Paris and throughout France, Europe, the United States, and Japan. A soloist with the Orchestre des Concerts Lamoureux, he has been invited by many major French orchestras, including the Paris Opera, the Orchestre de Paris, the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris, and the Orchestre National d’Île-de-France, and has performed under the baton of distinguished conductors such as Roberto Benzi, Semyon Bychkov, Myung-whun Chung, Jean Fournet, Fabien Gabel, Ken-Ichiro Kobayashi, Paul Paray, Michel Plasson, Georges Prêtre, and Yutaka Sado. He conducts contemporary music ensembles and has served as assistant conductor of the National Youth Wind Orchestra (ONHJ) and the Regional Wind Orchestra School of Auvergne, and later as assistant to Jacques Grimbert at the Sorbonne Orchestra. His passion for chamber music has led him to perform in a wide variety of original and diverse ensembles. He has made numerous recordings (CDs, DVDs, film music, radio and television recordings) and enjoys collaborating with today’s composers, from whom he has commissioned or premiered several hundred works.
Holder of two Master’s degrees in pedagogy awarded by the French Ministry of Culture (teaching and conservatory director certification diplomas), Pierre Monty has pursued a highly active career in conservatory education as well as in higher education, notably at Paris-Sorbonne University and the Pôle Supérieur de Seine-Saint-Denis, in addition to numerous collaborations with the Conservatoires Nationaux Supérieurs de Musique et de Danse of Paris and Lyon.
A specialist in piccolo teaching, he has developed a specific technique that is fully complementary to and compatible with transverse flute playing. He is currently a professor at the École Normale de Musique de Paris – Alfred Cortot and a visiting professor at the Osaka College of Music. From 1999 to 2010, he was in charge of the international flute, piccolo, and chamber music competitions of UFAM (Union Française des Artistes Musiciens). He regularly organizes seminars and gives lectures and master classes. A member of the pedagogical commission of the Confédération Musicale de France, he regularly publishes work on pedagogy, examinations and competitions, repertoire, and contemporary music creation.
Pierre Monty is president of the association Musiques, Répertoires, Recherches in Paris and honorary president of the association Flûtissime in Chablis.
