This course aims to explore the “jazz object,” in constant transformation since the beginning of the 20th century. The main areas of study are: - Consolidating knowledge of the different periods in the history of jazz, its key figures (musicians, record labels, promoters, etc.), and the main geographical areas of production (United States, Europe, etc.);
- Studying the social and political contexts of the creation and reception of jazz works, with particular attention to issues of discrimination (racial, gender-based, etc.);
- Connecting jazz with other aesthetics (classical, popular, world musics) as well as with other art forms.

This course focuses on understanding the logics and languages developed by jazz musicians across different eras. The main areas of study are: - Acquiring methodological tools for analyzing styles and works;
- Studying improvisation practices and performance codes (accompaniment, interaction) specific to each period;
- Analyzing the frameworks (harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic languages) of major improvisers, arrangers, and composers.
