This course aims to explore the ever-evolving phenomenon of “jazz” since the early 20th century. The main areas of study include:
- Consolidation of knowledge about the various periods of jazz history, its key figures (musicians, labels, promoters, etc.), and its main geographical centers (United States, Europe, etc.);
- Study of the social and political context of creation and reception, particularly regarding discrimination (racial, gender-based, etc.);
- Connections between jazz and other musical forms (classical, popular, world music) and other art forms.

This course seeks to understand the logic and musical languages developed by jazz musicians across different eras. The main focuses include:
- Acquiring methodological tools for stylistic and musical analysis;
- Studying improvisation contexts and performance codes (accompaniment, interaction) relevant to each period;
- Analyzing the harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic frameworks of major improvisers, arrangers, and composers.
