A new chapter begins: starting in October 2025, a Jazz Department will be added to the School’s prestigious curriculum.
Renowned for the excellence of its advanced classical music programs, the École Normale de Musique de Paris is broadening its musical horizons with the creation of a new Jazz Department, dedicated to young professionals and students nearing the end of their higher education.
Applications are open until July, but early registration is strongly recommended—especially for students applying for a scholarship.
A program designed for active musicians
The curriculum offers advanced-level classes in:
- jazz piano
- jazz voice
- jazz double bass
- jazz drums
- jazz saxophone
These courses are intended for musicians already engaged in a professional career or looking to refine their skills at the highest level. Each student receives 1 hour of private instruction per week (excluding school holidays), for a total of 32 hours throughout the year, in a setting tailored to the needs of working artists.
A world-class teaching faculty
The Jazz Department is led by internationally recognized artists and educators, committed to sharing their expertise and passion:
- Bojan Z, Franco-Serbian pianist and key figure in the European jazz scene
- Yaron Herman, pianist and composer blending jazz, classical, and contemporary influences
- Joe Sanders, acclaimed American double bassist and composer
- Claudia Solal, vocalist and improviser with a unique, genre-defying voice
- David Linx, a major figure in European vocal jazz
- Gauthier Garrigue, prolific French drummer with an international career
- Émile Parisien, award-winning saxophonist and cornerstone of the French jazz scene
- Stéphane Audard, musicologist and specialist in jazz education history
An inspiring environment for creation
Jazz students have access to the School’s rehearsal rooms and studios, and actively take part in its artistic life—especially through performances in the Salle Cortot.
A new jazz festival will launch in the 2025–2026 season to showcase student and faculty projects and support emerging jazz talent.
A comprehensive and cross-disciplinary training
Beyond instrumental study, students may also attend:
- jazz-specific theory classes (harmony, composition, jazz culture), led by Stéphane Audard
- group classes in classical music (solfège, analysis, music history)
- year-round workshops and masterclasses
- Tai Chi sessions, physical therapy support, and access to the Digital Chair
- Daily access to the School, from Monday through Sunday
Tuition and scholarships
- Annual tuition: €7,520
- Registration fee: €400 (EU students) / €600 (non-EU students)
- A scholarship program is available, based on application and financial need.
Students must first register online. Once they receive their student number, they may complete the scholarship application form. Two scholarship committees are held annually, with the first taking place at the end of May and responses sent out shortly thereafter.
Join the journey!
With the creation of this new department, the École Normale de Musique de Paris seeks to offer jazz musicians a stimulating and supportive environment worthy of their artistic ambitions.
