A student of Swiss baritone Fran\u00e7ois Loup, Fran\u00e7ois Le Roux<\/strong> was a member of the Op\u00e9ra de Lyon troupe from 1980 to 1985. This marked the beginning of an international career that has taken him to the Op\u00e9ra de Paris, La Scala in Milan, Covent Garden in London, La Fenice in Venice, and opera houses in Vienna, Munich, Hamburg, Zurich, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Buenos Aires. His repertoire spans from Monteverdi to contemporary opera, and he has premiered works by major contemporary composers such as Harrison Birtwistle, Henri Dutilleux, Hans Werner Henze, Philippe Hersant, Witold Lutos\u0142awski, and Toru Takemitsu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His name is closely associated with Debussy\u2019s opera Pell\u00e9as et M\u00e9lisande<\/em>, which he first performed in the role of Pell\u00e9as (recorded under Claudio Abbado for Deutsche Grammophon) and, since 1997, in the role of Golaud on the world\u2019s leading stages. He sang Golaud for the opera\u2019s centenary performance at the Op\u00e9ra-Comique on April 30, 2002, and for its staged premiere in Moscow in 2007 at the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A recognized ambassador of French m\u00e9lodie and German Lied<\/em> in recital and on recordings<\/strong>, he regularly collaborates with pianists such as Jeff Cohen, Olivier Godin, Christian Ivaldi, Graham Johnson, Pascal Rog\u00e9, and Roger Vignoles. He is the founder and Artistic Director of the Francis Poulenc Academy in Tours, dedicated to the interpretation of French art song, which celebrates its 29th anniversary this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His book Le Chant intime, De l\u2019interpr\u00e9tation de la m\u00e9lodie fran\u00e7aise<\/em> (written with Romain Raynaldy), published by Fayard in Paris, received the 2004 Ren\u00e9 Dumesnil Prize from the Acad\u00e9mie des Beaux-Arts. Its English translation was released by Oxford University Press in New York in 2021. His second book, L\u2019op\u00e9ra fran\u00e7ais \u2013 une question de style<\/em> (also with Romain Raynaldy), was published by Hermann in Paris in April 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His extensive discography<\/a> has earned numerous awards. Highlights include the complete M\u00e9lodies<\/em> of Poulenc (ATMA Classique, 2013), Debussy (LIGIA Digital, 2014), and Henri Dutilleux (Passavant Music, awarded the Michel Garcin Prize by the Acad\u00e9mie du Disque Lyrique in 2016), a recording dedicated to the songs of Andr\u00e9 Jolivet (2018), another to French melodramas (2019), and Chansons douces et am\u00e8res<\/em> in 2022. He has contributed to the publication of previously unpublished m\u00e9lodies<\/em> by Nadia Boulanger and Dutilleux (Alphonse Leduc), and Poulenc (Chester).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is a professor at the \u00c9cole Normale de Musique de Paris<\/a>, where he organizes each March the \u201cPrintemps de la M\u00e9lodie\u201d<\/strong>, a full afternoon at Salle Cortot showcasing young performers and renowned artists. For the past seven years, alongside Dame Felicity Lott, he has co-led the Wigmore Hall French Song Exchange<\/strong>, which selects and mentors eight singers and two pianists for concerts at Wigmore Hall in London and Salle Cortot in Paris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was nominated at the Victoires de la Musique Classique<\/strong><\/em> in 2014 and 2018 in the \u201cLyric Artist of the Year\u201d category. In 2024, he made his debut as narrator in L\u2019Histoire du soldat<\/em> by Stravinsky in Montreal in April under the baton of Nicolas Ellis. He also participated in a tribute to composer G\u00e9rard Cond\u00e9 in Paris in June 2024. Pianist Florent Boffard invited him to perform the role of the Sprecher<\/em> in Sch\u00f6nberg\u2019s rarely heard Ode to Napoleon<\/em> at the International Festival of La Roque d\u2019Anth\u00e9ron in August 2024.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":10634,"template":"","discipline":[111],"class_list":["post-1826","teacher","type-teacher","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","discipline-singing"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"\nLE ROUX Fran\u00e7ois -
