Trained in Belgrade and later in the United States with Clare Fischer, he settled in France in 1988 and studied at the CIM (Centre d&#8217;Information Musicale). Winner of the 1st prize for soloist at the La D\u00e9fense Competition in 1990, he joined Henri Texier, worked with Michel Portal, and developed a unique career combining jazz, Balkan music, and improvisation. He studied music at the conservatory of Chamb\u00e9ry. He has recorded with notable artists such as Michel Legrand, Ludovic de Preissac, and others. He writes arrangements for various big bands and orchestras. He teaches at the <strong>CRR (Conservatoire \u00e0 Rayonnement R\u00e9gional) of Paris<\/strong> and coordinates the jazz department at the conservatory in the 11th arrondissement. He earned his doctorate in musicology in 2024, after defending his thesis on the history of jazz education. From an early age, he developed a personal style combining virtuosity, freedom, and melodic sensibility. Awarded the <strong>Victoire du Jazz<\/strong> in 2008 and the <strong>Adami Jazz Talent<\/strong> prize, he has chaired the piano jury at the <strong>Montreux Jazz Festival<\/strong> and served as a mentor at the <strong>Montreux Jazz Academy<\/strong>. Trained at the <strong>Brubeck Institute<\/strong> and the <strong>Thelonious Monk Institute<\/strong>, he has become one of the most sought-after bassists of his generation. He has collaborated with major figures in contemporary jazz such as Gerald Clayton, Charles Lloyd, Joshua Redman, Kendrick Scott, and Ben Wendel. As a bandleader, he has released three albums: <em>Introducing Joe Sanders<\/em> (2011), <em>Humanity<\/em> (2017), and <em>Parallels<\/em> (2024). His landmark project <em>A Lover\u2019s Question<\/em>, with James Baldwin, brought him international recognition. Since 1992, his duo with pianist Diederik Wissels has been praised for reinventing contemporary vocal jazz. A graduate of the Conservatory in 2002, he quickly made a name for himself on the jazz scene, collaborating with prestigious artists such as Henri Texier, Michel Portal, Seamus Blake, Christian Scott, \u00c9mile Parisien, Baptiste Trotignon, Kyle Eastwood, and Enrico Pieranunzi. He is co-leader of the group Flash Pig, which won the Jazz Academy\u2019s Album of the Year award in 2024. Trained in Marciac and then at the <strong>Conservatoire of Toulouse<\/strong>, he moved to Paris in 2000 and founded his own quartet in 2004 with Julien Tou\u00e9ry, Ivan G\u00e9lugne, and Sylvain Darrifourcq. His playing, at the crossroads of jazz and contemporary music, has led him to collaborate with major figures such as Michel Portal, Vincent Peirani, and Joachim K\u00fchn. Awarded numerous prizes (including the <strong>Django Reinhardt<\/strong> in 2012 and <strong>Victoires du Jazz<\/strong> in 2014), he has established himself as an essential figure in European jazz.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Study programs designed for students and working artists&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecolenormalecortot.com\/en\/accueil\/higher-education\/graduate-diploma\/\">Graduate diploma<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Graduate Diploma is recognized at level 7 (master level) of the french National Register of Professional Certifications (RNCP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Graduate program includes&nbsp;<strong>one hour of individual instrument lessons, ensemble practice, and theoretical instruction (history of jazz, jazz harmony, jazz composition)<\/strong>&nbsp;over 32 weeks of classes per year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecolenormalecortot.com\/en\/accueil\/higher-education\/advanced-classes\/\">Advanced training program<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The advanced program allows artists to deepen their instrumental mastery in a setting suited to high-level musical practice and an exceptional location. Each student receives&nbsp;one hour of individual instruction per week, excluding school holidays (for a total of 24 hours per year). Students also have access to theory classes in the jazz department.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>A Comprehensive Training Program<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to jazz programs, students will have access to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Group classes in classical music: music theory, music history, analysis, to enrich their musical culture&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tai Chi classes, a physical therapist, and the Digital Chair program, which are available to all students&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Workshops and masterclasses throughout the year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>An Environment Conducive to Creativity<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Students in the Jazz Department have access to the School\u2019s studios and rehearsal rooms and participate in the artistic life of the institution, particularly the concerts held in the&nbsp;<strong>Salle Cortot<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sallecortot.com\/la-programmation\/festival-jazz\/\">jazz festival<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;is organized every year to promote the young jazz scene and projects led by our students and teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students have access to the school every day, from <strong>Monday to Sunday<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Fees and Scholarships<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The annual cost of the program is&nbsp;<strong>\u20ac8,640<\/strong>&nbsp;for the Graduate program and&nbsp;<strong>\u20ac7,900&nbsp;<\/strong>for the advanced training program, with additional fees::<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>\u20ac400 registration fee<\/strong> for European students<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>\u20ac600 registration fee<\/strong> for non-European students<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Enhanced option: 15 hours spread throughout the year, subject to the professor&#8217;s approval. Cost:&nbsp;<strong>\u20ac1,820<\/strong>. This option can only be taken in addition to a course of study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<strong>scholarship<\/strong>&nbsp;system is available upon request and based on&nbsp;a file review. Students must first pre-register online on the school&#8217;s website.
